Pair of Italian Torah finials (rimmonim)
Silversmith: Fedeli, Stefano
A rare pair of Torah finials, composed of five chased panels supported by scrolls, hung with bells and surmounted by a fruit knop, the staves lead weighted. Stefano Fedeli was born in Rome in 1794, the son of a distinguished Roman goldsmith, Giovanni Fedeli. Stephano was admitted as master to the Guild of Goldsmiths in Rome in October 1815, and was granted the mark which is struck, in addition to the Roman town mark, on these rimmonim. He continued to use this mark until 1866, when he registered a new mark. He retired in 1870. Stylistically these rimmonim date from the period 1815 to 1845.
History note: Collection of Sir Moses Montefiore Bart. (1784-1885) for use in his private synagogue in Ramsgate, Kent.
