Description

Jar. Grey stoneware, thrown and turned, covered in white slip, and painted in dark-brown iron pigment under dribbly, clear glaze. The high-shouldered jar has a wide mouth and vertical rim, it tapers gently to a small, recessed, flat base. The decoration is in three horizontal bands. The central band has lozenge-shaped panels containing a crane in a landscape, a rabbit in a landscape, and another crane in a landscape, with closely painted spiral patterns in the spandrels. The band above the central band is decorated with spirals and squiggles, and the band above the foot with classic scroll.

History note: Purchased from Franck, February 1921, for £7.10s.0d; Henry Scipio Reitlinger (d. 1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
