Garden Flowers Valentine envelope
Publisher: Rimmel, Eugène
An envelope for a Rimmel sachet valentine. Mid-blue with a gold embossed design on recto and verso. On the recto, a 'frame' of lace-paper is affixed to the centre and decorated with a die-cut and embossed chromolithograph of a hand holding a large bouquet of flowers. The bouquet operates as a flap to reveal underneath a printed verse by Paterson entitled 'Garden Flowers'. The panel onto which the verse is printed is hand-coloured with a pink wash. On the verso are a series of embossed inscriptions: ENTERED AT / STATIONER'S HALL / RIMMEL'S SACHET VALENTINE / OF THE / LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS / RIMMEL / London / PERFUMER TO H.R.H THE PRINCESS OF WALES / Paris. Also two embossed hearts pierced with arrows to left and right. A remnant of the cotton wool to which the perfume would originally have been added is still attached to the inside of the envelope flap. In an advertising leaflet of 1875, Rimmel's 'Language of Flowers' sachet valentines are priced at 1 shilling. (An example of the leaflet is in Malcolm Warrington's valentine collection).
