Description

Silver lace-paper with an oval-shaped frame of silver lace-paper (design of fushia and other plants) mounted on paper springs. A heart shape cut out at the centre contains a chromolithographed bouquet of fruit and flowers. Two small windows below contain pink silk rose buds backed with turquoise cut-paper leaves. A chromolithographed and varnished spray of flowers on silvered paper inside a small, oval-shaped window at upper centre. The inside of the card is blank. On the album leaf below P.14344-R-22 and 23 is an inscription in graphite written in Catherine Parson's hand, which states: 'These five valentines were sent between the years 1859-63 by Dr. Glaisher's sister to her school friend Mrs Florence Wilson, who gave them, with other valentines, to Dr Glaisher for his collection in 1925.'. Other than possibly the two cards affixed to this leaf of the album (P.14344-R-22 and P.14344-R-23), it is diffcult to identify conclusively the 'five' cards named in this inscription. See also P.14397-R, which was taken from this album and is now loose. Catherine Parsons was a close friend of Glaisher, especially towards the end of his life, and undertook to mount and arrange his valentine collection into albums. See letters from Glaisher to Parsons held at the Fitzwilliam Museum.
