Description

Lace-paper mounted on roughly-cut thin white card, the original backing sheet missing. Embossed chromolithographic scraps of flowers decorating upper left and right corners and lower centre. A hand-coloured panel at the centre with a collage of chromolithographed flower scraps and cut-paper and hand-coloured elements including a large mushroom and a pair of frogs. A hand-written verse above in blue and red inks: "My heart is / where true love / reposes. / I'll strew / for you a / bed of Roses." The title hand-written in blue ink below: "Umbrella Courtship". DOBBS embossed at lower centre. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 57.
