Description

Chromolithograph of a white swan on water within a lace-paper frame mounted with paper springs onto green paper with an embossed 'pleated' border. Embossed scraps with silver detailing of Cupid in a boat and flowers with scroll are affixed at upper and lower centre. A chromolithographed motto affixed to the lower centre of the lace-paper frame: A TRIBUTE OF AFFECTION. The inside pages are blank. This card was produced in a variety of different coloured papers (pink, blue yellow) with alternative images (kingfisher and hummingbird), scraps and mottoes. P.14403-R was probably taken from the album P.14343-R which contains a number of cards from the same series, all mounted together. See P.14343-R-89, P.14343-R-90, P.14343-R-92; P.14343-R-93, P.14343-R-94 and P.14343-R-95. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 64.
