Description

Collage of cut-paper, hand-coloured birds, flowers and foliage with blue silk, gauze clouds and gold tinsel crescent moon and etched, cut-paper castle on white lace-paper with a cameo embossed inner border with gold ground (See also P.14410-R-34). Title written in blue ink at upper centre: "Prospect of a New Moon.". "Hope Castle" written in brown ink below and "Happiness" in blue ink on the flag in the castle tower. The door of the castle opens to reveal a hand-drawn and cut-paper Cupid holding a golden bow. The collage lifts at the right side to reveal a hand-written message in black ink (different hand - presumably the sender's): "A token of / constancy from / one who loves / you". DOBBS embossed at lower centre. Watermark: JOYNSON / 1845. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 34. A graphite number "34" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
