Description

Collage of hand-coloured cut-paper, white silk leaves, pink silk ribbon and silver tinsel and silvered embossed wreath on cream laid paper with gold embossed border and inner 'frame' of lace-paper. Handwritten message at upper centre and within the central wreath: "Affection's / Faithful Offering / To be worn / near the Heart ; True Sympathy / Knows no Exhaustion". The flower collage lifts up to reveal a hand-written inscription (presumably from the sender): "From / your sincere / and / devoted / admirer". DOBBS embossed at lower centre. Watermark: Shield. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 31. A graphite number "31" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
