Description

4to-size card of white lace-paper and cameo-embossed inner border with gold ground (See also P.14410-R-21). Collage of cut-paper and hand-coloured flowers, foliage, flags, shield and lithographed and cut-paper swag with gold detail. Motto: "Truth" (in silvered cut-paper). Embossed stamp: DOBBS at lower centre. Message written onto flag in blue ink: "Through / every danger / constant". Watermark: J WHATMAN / 1852. The inside pages are blank. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 35. A graphite number "35" is written onto the album leaf in the lower left-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
