Valentine card
Publisher: Dobbs, Henry
4to-size card of white lace-paper (the front and back sheets pasted together) with a collage of cut-paper and hand-coloured flowers, foliage, and book with gold detail. A central panel of lace-paper over a printed gold background contains a 'cobweb' device (the thread has been lost) with a hand-drawn and coloured image of two birds with a nest of blue eggs underneath. A handwritten verse at upper centre: "In constancy and mutual Love / Let's take a lesson from the dove!" The collages of cut-paper flowers and the book can be lifted to reveal hand-written inscriptions in black ink (presumably written by the sender): "Hope"; "Unity"; "I love you dearly". DOBBS embossed at lower centre. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 33. A graphite number "33" is written onto the album leaf in the lower left-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
