Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
Valentine ?bookmark of broad pink satin ribbon with fringed edges and hand-painted posy of violets in gouache. A miniature envelope containing a small pink satin bow with handwritten inscription: With love from / Cecil. The miniature envelope was originally attached to the satin ribbon (remnants of adhesive and imprint of gouache stems on the verso). The ribbon has since been folded and the envelope fallen off. The ribbon and miniature envelope are contained in a manilla envelope with printed return address: J. SALKELD, / Bookseller, / 306, CLAPHAM ROAD, LONDON, S.W.9., from where Glaisher presumably acquired it. J. Salkeld is John Salkeld (ca. 1870-1913). Glaisher discusses his valentines purchases from Salkeld in letters to Miss Catherine Parsons held in the Fitzwilliam Museum archive. He is first named as a source of valentines from February 4th, 1925 onwards, especially in relation to albums containing valentines. See MS 919-1985.
