Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
Small 48mo-size playing-card-style comic valentine with imported chromolithographed figure incorporating opening flaps. The single piece of card has a gilt embossed border with scalloped edges and lithographed lilac ground with scroll design. A portly male figure wearing a tasselled cap holds two sacks of money with flaps which open to reveal a flower bouquet and a piglet. The figure lifts up to reveal a chromolithographed motto: "Forget me not". From a series and one of eight examples of playing-card style comic valentines employing imported chromolithographed figure scraps with opening flaps that are mounted onto the same album leaf. A handwritten inscription in graphite on the album leaf: "Original price 4d [4 pennies] each". The hand has been identified as that of Glaisher's friend, the local Antiquarian, Catherine Parsons, who assembled and arranged Glaisher's valentine albums in 1924. See letters from J.W.L. Glaisher to Miss Catherine Parsons in the Fitzwilliam Museum Archive. An additional graphite inscription below P.14412-R-83: "1/=" [1 shilling]. 1 shilling was equivalent to 12 pennies. It is possible that this inscription relates to writing on the verso of P.14412-R-84.
