Description

Loose inside album P.14413-R, inside the back fly leaf. A home-made valentine comprising a small white cameo-embossed lace-paper 'front' affixed to the centre of a 'back' piece of larger white lace-paper of a different style and design which is mounted onto a larger sheet of blue wove paper. The spine of the lace-paper 'front' is still attached along the left edge and a scene at lower centre features a couple moving from a windmill at the left towards a church on the right. A central oval window is backed with a rectangular chromolithograph of a drinking fountain decorated with swags, flowers and white doves. On the verso of the chromolithograph is an oval medallion of white wove paper with lace-paper edge stamped 'MEEK' at upper centre. This paper is mounted with a circular disc of white wove paper with a scalloped edge and printed motto: 'A / LOVER'S / OFFERING.', below which is affixed a fake gold wedding ring. A length of purple ribbon is attached to the inside of the lace-paper 'front'. At the centre of the larger 'back' piece of lace-paper is a small, circular window with scalloped edge into which is inserted a disc of yellow paper with letterpress verse: 'MEMORY / At midnight hour I love / to think / On those most dear, most far from me; / And memory often at that hour / Would gladly wing its flight to / thee. ...'. A scrap of flowers and motto: 'TO ONE I LOVE' is affixed at lower centre.
