Description

Cream lace-paper with central window and blind of cream gauze mounted with a collage of hand-coloured cut-paper flowers and leaves with small red felt flowers and real moss on a lace-paper roundel. Indentations at the centre of the two large pink and white flowers suggest that applied beads or jewels are missing. A hand-painted design of flower garlands and a lithographed verse in bronze ink on the inside right-hand page is seen through the gauze blind at upper and lower centre. The verse reads: 'Of flowers the fairest of the grove. Accept and let them be / An emblem of unfading love. For such is mine to thee'. A hand-written verse in black ink between the garlands on the inside right-hand page (by the sender): 'To be beloved is all I need, / And when I love I _love_ indeed'. Watermark: J WHA[TMAN] / 18[...]. A hand-written inscription in graphite at lower right corner of inside right-hand page, presumably written by a dealer: 'Rare [?crit] work variety / 5/6 [5 shillings sixpence] 183-'.
