Description

White lace-paper with a central panel mounted with a collage at lower centre of cut-paper hand-coloured flowers and leaves with additional stencilled leaves. The left side of the collage lifts up to reveal a hand-written inscription in grey ink: 'I love'. The second part of the message is written at lower right: 'but thee', although the right-hand section of collage underneath which it would have been hidden has been lost. A flower-shaped window has been cut out of the central panel and the edges coloured alternately blue and pink. The window has a blind of white wove paper which is decorated with a coloured, cut-paper garland of leaves and flowers around a small, hand-written (lithographed?) motto in blue ink: 'Unity / and / Happiness'. A verse is written (lithographed?) in small letters of blue ink at upper centre: 'May this declare my love for thee as true and fixed as love can be'. 'DOBBS & CO' stamped at lower centre left. The front paper is adhered to the back paper. A graphite inscription on the album leaf below the valentine documents the maker's name: 'Dobbs & Co'. The hand (unknown) is recognisable as that which is seen in other albums throughout the collection, and which reliably documents inscriptions, prices and maker's names. A further graphite inscription on the album leaf above the valentine: '2/-' [2 shillings], probably the same hand as before, which documents a price found presumably on the verso of the valentine.
