Description

A white lace-paper front mounted onto a slightly larger sheet of buff-coloured wove paper which has been cut down on all sides. A message is lithographed (as handwritten) in blue ink at upper and lower centre: 'We must be united, / Dearest Valentine'. At upper centre is a lithographed cut-paper scroll inscribed in blue ink: 'Cupid's Arms' and which surrounds a central shield divided into four sections coloured alternately blue and red with each bearing tiny paper motifs relating to love: a silver paper ornament of a dove with letter; a white paper lily; a gilt paper ring; two pink coloured paper hearts. Below the shield is a collage of hand-coloured, cut-paper flowers and leaves with hand-painted additions of stems and buds in gouache. The right-hand section can be lifted up for insertion of an inscription, although the paper underneath is blank. 'KERSHAW' is stamped at lower right. A hand-written inscription in graphite at upper left: 'L/C'. Similar inscriptions/markings in graphite are found on other cards in the same album. The interior is blank.
