Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A single 8vo sheet of heavy, white laid paper mounted with a piece of cameo-embossed lace-paper with lithographed silver detailing (tarnishing indicated by 'rainbow' effect). The embossed scene features a gothic-style reredos with statues in niches and a scene at upper centre with an embracing couple flanked by Hymen (left) and Cupid (right). A central circular window has a yellow gauze blind mounted with a cut-paper, hand-coloured Cupid drawing his bow, a canopy of pink and white pleated and fringed silk affixed above. A collage of cut-paper, hand-coloured fern fronds and flowers decorates the lower edge of the canopy and the window. A small collage of a cut-paper, hand-coloured pink rose with leaves is affixed at lower centre. Mounted onto the white laid paper at lower centre is a cut-paper open 'book' with lithographed silver edge and verse: 'When this motto / you accept / Think of one / who loves you best'. A faint handwritten inscription in graphite at upper left: 'Cat 34 / 5/6 [5 shillings sixpence]'. 'Cat 34' probably relates to the catalogue of the bookseller, R.S. Frampton who was based at "Walton House", 37 Fonthill Road, Finsbury Park, London, N4. Three of Frampton's catalogues with lot descriptions cut from them them were found in boxes containing Glaisher's valentines. No. 34 of the Frampton catalogues is dated 1923-24. Several cards throughout the Glaisher albums can be related to catalogue No. 34 through clippings from the catalogue which are mounted onto the album leaves below the cards.
