Description

A small oval medallion of white lace-paper with central roundel containing a panel of silk printed with a title and verse: 'HEART'S-EASE / Dear maid, if e'er / a grief or care - Oppress / thy gentle heart, - oh! may / my love a solace prove, / And sweet hearts / ease impart!'. The lace-paper medallion can be raised to reveal an oval-shaped chromolithograph of the head of a young woman with brown ringlets, framed with roses. The motto, 'FIDELITY' is printed on a scroll and affixed at upper centre. The valentine is contained within a lace-paper envelope with four triangular flaps which are partially pasted in a 'open' position onto the album leaf. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf at lower left, 'Wood', transcribes the maker's stamp, which is presumably on the verso and was noted prior to mounting.
