Description

A valentine of four leaves; a front-paper of gilt embossed lace-paper with red paper backing to four of the lace-paper designs and a central oval window. Inside is a leaf of purple wove paper with a scalloped edge which is mounted with a smaller leaf of white lace-paper with a central oval window around which is a die-cut wreath of chromolithographed forget-me-nots and a cote containing two doves with motto: 'PURITY'. Below the layer of lace-paper, a centrepiece of gilt lace-paper is pasted onto the purple wove paper and mounted with scraps of pansies and a sealed letter. Below the purple wove paper is another leaf of heavier wove paper with a lithographed design of geometric shapes influenced by art nouveau and printed in colours: red, yellow, green and blue with a central title and verse: 'AFFECTION. / For you - affection in my breast / Burns deep with one incessant flame; / With power immense it is possessed, / Which not strong floods can quench or tame. ...'. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf below P.14417-R-62: '4/6' is probably a transcription of the price found on the handwritten MS from second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R where P.14417-R-62 is listed towards the end of the first sheet: '_Affection_ For you affection 4-6'. Glaisher bought many valentines from R.S. Frampton, especially between 1923 and 1925. P.14417-R-62 is listed with two other cards from album P.14417-R (P.14417-R-59 and P.14417-R-96), although much of the Frampton MS relates to cards that are contained in album P.14416-R. For the Frampton MS, see P.14416-R-L1.
