Description

Cameo-embossed gilt, die-cut paper of a scene featuring a watermill on the right and an oval window with scalloped edge on the left. The window contains a panel of white silk embroidered with pink roses and a scroll with the verse: 'WITH ITS MODEST VEIL / SAYS TRUTH IN LOVE / WILL E'ER PREVAIL'. The gilt paper is decorated with chromolithographed scraps of pink roses at upper and lower right and a garland of forget-me-nots at centre left. A scrap of a young girl wearing a pink dress is affixed on a paper spring at the centre. The gilt paper is mounted with paper springs onto a white embossed lace paper front, which is adhered to the back paper. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf to the right: '4/6'. This price was presumably transcribed from the verso of the valentine before it was mounted into the album.
