Description

A 'raised' valentine in three layers. The top two layers of cameo-embossed lace-paper are held together with paper springs, but which are now adhered together. The scene depicted on the top layer is of trees and two staircases to left and right with two couples wearing 17th-century costume descending each. Urns with flowers on pedestals to left and right. A roundel at the centre displays a chromolithograph of a scene with Cupid or Hymen reclining with a flaming torch beside him and holing a white dove. A winged putto (or possibly Cupid) watches from behind a bush to the left. Below the chromolithograph on the top layer is a collage of green and white fabric leaves with frosting and a purple satin flower with fabric stamens over a silver embossed ornament. A hand-coloured fabric forget-me-not and silver paper fern fronds are affixed on the right. Above the central window is a lithographed motto within a white open paper book with silver detail: 'Permit me to convey to / Thee / how thy heart is dear / to me'. Two 'leaves' of white, frosted fabric with gilt vein detail are affixed onto the second layer and displayed through the die-cut areas of the top layer. 'WINDSOR' is stamped onto the staircase at lower right and along the spine at upper centre. The first and second layer are adhered to the back paper. See also P.14418-R-13, which is from the same series and employs many of the same collage elements but features a different chromolithographed scene and motto.
