Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A single sheet of white lace-paper which is folded twice. The lace-paper has a hand-drawn inner line-border in red ink with a scalloped design. At the centre is a hand-painted scene of a peasant couple beside a fence, the female figure seated and playing a lute. Below is a collage of embossed cut-paper green painted leaves with silver and gold metallic paper additions and embossed, hand-coloured flowers. A verse is handwritten in blue ink above and below the central image: 'As gentle swains in time of yore, Their loved ones hearts were wont to woo: E'en so would I, thy love implore / E'en so would I thy pity sue.'. An embossed silver paper ornament of a winged putto with a garland of flowers surrounded by a glory is affixed at upper centre. P.14419-R.f12v is a valentine of a similar design with comparable collage elements, a hand-drawn border (in blue) and verse written in the same style.
