Valentine card
Publisher: Kershaw, George
A valentine front of white cameo-embossed lace-paper with an overall design of flowers growing on trellis, which is set off by a pink slip paper behind, and a scene of a courting shepherd and shepherdess at lower centre and a couple sitting back to back at upper centre. At the centre is an large white embossed paper leaf with gilt detail and which is mounted with a collage of cut-paper leaves and flowers with gold metallic grasses. Additional leaves are hand-painted in watercolour. At the centre of the collage is a cut-paper chromolithograph of a dark-haired young woman wearing a yellow and pink dress. 'KERSHAW & SON' is stamped along the spine at centre left. The back paper is missing. 'Edith' is written in graphite on the album leaf below the valentine in an unknown hand. The name 'Edith' is also written onto the album leaf along with that of 'Netty' and these names would probably account for the single initials of 'E' or 'N' written on the album leaves adjacent to a number of the valentines in the album. The initials presumably indicate either from whom they were received or to whom they were sent.
