Valentine card
Publisher: Kershaw, George
A valentine of pink and gold cameo-embossed lace-paper of a design featuring latticework and putti and Cupid. with a handcoloured back paper behind. The front is adhered to the back. An oval window at the centre has a net blind which is mounted with a collage of hand-coloured blue and yellow embossed paper leaves and red flowers with gold tinsel centres. At lower centre, a paper scroll with lithographed detail in gold ink bears the verse: 'How seet to hear in shady grove / The strains of true and constant love'. 'KERSHAW & SON' is stamped along the spine at lower centre. An initial 'N' is written in graphite on the album leaf below the valentine. The names 'Edith' and 'Netty' are written into the album. These names would probably account for the single initials of 'E' or 'N' written on the album leaves adjacent to a number of the valentines in the album. The initials presumably indicate either from whom they were received or to whom they were sent.
