Description

A small 32mo-size valentine of white lace-paper with a dark red slip paper. The first two words of the verse, 'Little Miss' are drawn in gold ink at upper centre with the 'L' as a garland of leaves studded with a small silver tinsel flower. The rest of the verse is handwritten in blue ink: 'Pretty Miss / May blessings be upon you / If I'd half a crown a day / I'd spend it all upon you'. A collage of cut-paper and hand-coloured flowers are arranged at lower right. The leaves at lower left and upper right lift up to reveal a handwritten message in black ink (presumably written by the sender): 'Pure / Affection'. The back paper is missing. An initial 'N' is written in graphite on the album leaf below the valentine. The names 'Edith' and 'Netty' are written into the album. These names would probably account for the single initials of 'E' or 'N' written on the album leaves adjacent to a number of the valentines in the album. The initials presumably indicate either from whom they were received or to whom they were sent.
