Valentine card
Publisher: Rimmel, Eugène
Silvered lace-paper with central panel of white silk, hand-painted in gouache with a convolvulus flower, buds and leaves. Below, at lower centre is a collage of white satin leaves joined by an embossed and glazed cherub head scrap. A small lozenge of white paper with lithographed motto in blue ink is affixed at the lower edge: 'I'll cling to thee'. A back paper of white coated paper. A stamp on the inside, right-hand page at the lower right corner: 'E. RIMMEL / PERFUMER / LONDON & PARIS'. On the verso are handwritten inscriptions in graphite at the upper right corner: 'n/u / 2/6 [2 shillings and sixpence]'. This is one of Rimmel’s ‘The Language of Flowers’ Valentines’, which are described in an 1867 advertisement:
‘Comprises a series of the following Flowers, prettily painted on the finest moiré antique, framed in Silver Lace:- SINGLE FLOWERS – QUARTO SIZE’. The ‘convolvulus – I’ll cling to thee’ is one of twelve flowers with attached meanings
