My Love (My Dove) Valentine card

A valentine of white lace-paper with hand-painted words (as leafy garlands), studded with cut-paper hand-coloured forget me nots and pink roses: 'My Love'. The 'L' is painted onto paper with shaped, gilt edges and applied. When lifted up it reveals the painted letter, 'D'; thus 'Love' becomes 'Dove'. A collage of cut-paper hand-coloured white lilies and leaves are affixed at lower centre. DOBBS KIDD & [CO] is stamped at lower centre. A watermark: J WHATMAN / 1883. The interior is blank.A few graphite inscriptions on the verso: '49' ; '18 -'.
