Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A valentine with a front of white lace-paper and central oval window backed with white silk which is embroidered with flowers and hand-painted additions of stems and leaves and applied satin leaves. Embossed roses within the lace-paper are hand coloured. Two cut-paper and hand-coloured yellow birds are affixed at centre left and right. The bird on the left carries a paper scroll in its beak which is printed with a verse: 'Look in the mirror / love, thine image see / Then chide me not / for constancy / to thee'. The bird on the right carries a gold wedding ring in its beak (a small ring of gilt paper). The interior is blank. The valentine is mounted onto a larger sheet of white wove paper, which has the remains of sealing wax? along upper and lower edges. An inscription written in black ink at the lower right corner of the sheet indicates the price paid for the valentine: 'Cost 5/- [5 shillings]'.
