Description

A valentine designed for a child on white wove paper with an embossed border with scalloped edge, contained inside an envelope with P.14552-R. At the centre, against a lithographed and hand-coloured parkland background is a young girl wearing a blue and white striped skirt suit. The head, torso and legs of the figure are hand-coloured lithographed cut-outs which are each mounted on paper springs, so as to appear three-dimensional. A motto printed onto a white and gilt paper scroll is affixed below: 'A Tribute / OF / AFFECTION'. Below the image to the left is printed: 'R. Canton, London'. The interior is blank. An inscription in graphite on the verso in Glaisher's hand: 'Given me Joan chatterton / Feb 1927'. Letters from Glaisher to Catherine Parsons in the Fitzwilliam Museum archive give details of Glaisher's connection to Joan Chatterton who, like Glaisher, was collector of children's books: 'I have been getting children's books of various kinds from David & Heffer but alas! keeping them myself & not sending them to Joan Chatterton.'. [Fitzwilliam Museum, MS 889-1985, 3 September, 1924 letter to Miss Catherine E. Parsons]. Chatterton also apparently supplied Glaisher with articles on valentines: 'I have also put in today's packet the letterpress of the article on Valentines the pictures for which we looked at yesterday (& which Joan Chatterton sent me) & another article.'. [Fitzwilliam Museum, MS 890-1985, 7 September, 1924 letter to Miss Catherine E. Parsons]. Chatterton also sent Glaisher valentines for his collection, including P.14553-R and P.14552-R: 'Dear Miss Parsons, With my tea yesterday came your valentine, for which indeed I thank you ... (I had one also from Joan Chatterton in Dublin to whom I have sent xmas books) ...'. [Fitzwilliam Museum, MS 923-1985, 15 February, 1925 letter to Miss Catherine E. Parsons]. Several books from Joan Chatterton's collection now form part of the Pollard Collection of children's books in Trinity College Library, Dublin. P.14553-R was contained along with P.14552-R inside a brown manilla envelope with hand-written address in black ink: 'Dr Glaisher / Trinity College / Cambridge'. An embossed stamp on the envelope flap: 'PROVINCIAL BANK OF IRELAND LIMITED'. The envelope is stored with P.14552-R.
