Description

A valentine of white lace-paper front with a frame of white and silver lace-paper with pale blue hand colouring mounted on paper springs. A scrap of a flaming heart is pasted onto the frame at upper centre and a collage of two purple satin leaves edged with gold and a scrap of a gateway are pasted at lower centre. At the centre of the frame is a chromolithograped scrap of a dark-haired female head inside a large pink rose, surrounded by rose buds and forget me nots. The scrap lifts up to reveal a verse printed onto a roundel of white silk within a gilt embossed circular frame: 'I Love Thee, Dearest / Time fails to tell--How true / my heart is thine; -- And / could I ever by thy side be / near thee, -- I'd breathe my / wishes to my Valentine.'. The front lacks a back paper and is pasted onto a larger piece of thick card, which has been cut down from a larger sheet, as is evident from the remains of four scrapbook prints on the verso. P.14554-R was contained inside a small manilla envelope inscribed in black ink in Glaisher's hand: '159 / Bought from Hiscoke's Library, Richmond / July 30, 1928.'. E.W. Hiscoke sent Glaisher three prints on approval, which he described as 'kind of valentines'. See handwritten note on Hiscoke's Library headed paper, dated September 8th 1928, Valentinesarchive5. It is not known if Glaisher bought Hiscoke's offerings.
