Description

P.14556-R, a sachet valentine, was contained inside a white envelope with an embossed design and handwritten address. The sachet is enclosed within an envelope of white, coated thin card with embossed lace work with gilt decoration, incorporating a lattice design with rosettes and entwining stems. A large, chromolithographed and embossed flower scrap is pasted within an ornate oval frame on the recto. It has been glued down where it might have lifted up to reveal a printed verse on the blank white oval behind. Four flaps on the verso open to reveal the sachet which has a chromolithographed cover of blossom against a black background and incorporating a motto in gothic script: 'Ne'er from thy heart my memory blot / ask but this Forget me not.'. The sachet has a border of applied strips of chromolithographed marigold garlands. The sachet valentine was posted to Glaisher by person unknown inside a white envelope with embossed design, incorporating oval shields, rosettes and Greek Key design with Hymen's torch and a posy of flowers in place of a seal. It is addressed quite simply by hand in black ink: 'Dr Glaisher / Trinity College / Cambridge'. At the upper right corner of the envelope is a stamp of cost 'three halfpence', and bearing the head of George V. The envelope is postmarked: '13 FE / 25'. The valentine and envelope appear to have been bought together as a matching set c. 1925, with the design referencing earlier valentines of the 1870s and 1880. Although letters in the Fitzwilliam Museum Archive from Glaisher to Catherine Parsons give details of valentines that were sent to him by Parsons and others, including friends, acquaintances and dealers, these were almost always intended as additions to Glaisher's valentine collection rather than as valentines per se.
