Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A valentine of cream and gilt embossed paper with a lace design. An oval window at the centre contains a Baxter process print with flowers (possibly a needlebox print). A small paper scroll with gilt lithography: 'Sweet one, I / love thee'. An inscription in graphite on the inside right-hand page at upper right: 'Jane Douglas, Carlisle / about 1845?'. P.14593-R is one of two valentines contained in a red envelope which bear inscriptions relating to Jane Douglas in Carlisle. The same name and location is inscribed in the same hand inside P.14598-R, which is also contained in the same red envelope. See also P.14597-R, which is inscribed with a different name but same location (Carlisle) and in the same hand. The hand is closely comparable to that of Catherine Parsons, who arranged and mounted Glaisher's valentine collection from the Autumn of 1924 through to the Summer of the following year and beyond.
