Description

A boxed valentine in an original Raphael Tuck box with lid. Heavy cream wove paper with an embossed and chromolithographed design of pink roses and forget-me-nots in a basket at lower centre and a scene of a bridal couple in 18th-century costume in a landscape above, speckled with gold ink. A blue ribbon with a textile pink rose on a stem and a gold 'wedding ring', is tied through the card at centre left. 'With love' is embossed in blue ink at lower right with a verse printed in gold ink below: 'Fair days / and happy hours / Be yours through / all the Seasons'. Inside, a double sheet of white wove paper is tied into the card with the blue ribbon. On the left-hand inside page; a lithographed image of two birds building a nest. On the right-hand inside page; a lithographed verse: 'TO MY / VALENTINE / Lady of my delight, / Although I am half afraid / To whisper a hope that it with us still, / I sing you my serenade: / "Joy is again on the wing, / And this happy heart of mine / Takes courage anew with sweet thoughts of you / On the morn of St. Valentine!" '. The verso is speckled with gold ink. Printed on the verso, the trademark symbol of artist's easel and palette and below: 'Raphel Tuck & Sons, Ltd. / Publishers to the King and Queen / Copyright London. / The GOLDEN AGE Series PRODUCED IN THE UNITED KINGDOM'. The 'by Royal Appointment' notice dates the card to after 1893. The valentine is contained inside a shallow white cardboard box with lid, the lower half of which bears a Raphael Tuck printed label on the verso: 'MY VALENTINE / DESIGNED AND PRODUCED BY / RAPHAEL TUCK & SONS LTD / NO. 16'. The lid of the box is affixed with a white address label with printed address: 'Dr. J.W.L. GLAISHER, / TRINITY COLLEGE, / CAMBRIDGE', with postmarked stamp of 'three half pence' bearing head of George V. P.14609-R is another boxed Raphel Tuck valentine from the same series.
