Description

A boxed sachet valentine. A large sachet of white padded silk with 'frame' of silver lace-paper contained inside a shallow white cardboard box with a lid. Two ribbons of white silk are tied across an oval panel of cream lace-paper which is mounted with a collage of cut-paper and chromolithographed flowers and leaves with real grasses and hand-painted additions. A circular chromolithographed scrap with motto affixed at lower centre: 'To Me / Thou Art / Dear'. The verso is backed with white, coated paper. A price is inscribed in graphite: '6/- [6 shillings]'. A small white sticker with 'Valentine' printed in black ink is affixed onto the verso at upper centre. The base of the box is lined with white lace-paper around the edges. An inscription in graphite on the lid: '2 large Satchet [sic] Valentines / 12/6'. The inscription possibly relates also to P.14610-R. Several inscriptions on the verso of the base; handwritten in graphite and possibly relating to the original sender/recipient: 'Fa [...]-Ma[..] / S.W. Hotel'; handwritten in black ink, a mathematical calculation (Glaisher's hand?).
