The pineapple was an exotic luxury until large scale cultivation began in the early 1900s. Moulded ‘pineapple ware’, decorated with green and deep yellow glazes, was first introduced by Wedgwood and others in the mid 18th century and the pineapple continued to inspire potters through to the production of glazed earthenware majolica introduced by Minton at the Great Exhibition of 1851.
