Maker: Cooper, Emmanuel
Stoneware decorated with glaze and gold.
Stoneware with dark blue volcanic glaze with gold patches. The jug is oval in plan with straight sides, ridged horizontally on the interior, a projecting gutter-shaped spout, and a flat vertical D-shaped handle. With the exception of an oval area around the edge of the base, it is covered with volcanic glaze, which is variegated shades of pale to dark purplish-blue with a few random gold splashes on the exterior, and brown, grey and pale purplish-blue on the inside. The overall effect resembles the cratered surface of the moon.

Emmanuel Cooper OBE (1938-2012) trained with Gwyn Hanssen Piggott and Bryan Newman before setting up his own pottery, with shop front, in London. A consummate technician, he is known for his glazes which are sometimes delicate but often vibrantly coloured. With Eileen Lewenstein, Cooper founded the Ceramic Review, in 1970; his writing includes biographies of Bernard Leach and Lucie Rie.
This jug, amongst Cooper’s best work, was illustrated as the star object in the catalogue of Cooper’s retrospective at Ruthin Craft Centre, 2013
