Description

After the painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), (1775-76; Mannings, 231; Wallace Collection, London, P36). A young girl wearing a fancy gown and tiara, kneeling in a wooded clearing, hugging a spaniel dog to her chest. She looks directly out at the viewer. Jane Bowles (1772-1812) was the eldest child of Oldfield Bowles of North Aston, Oxfordshire, a talented amateur painter. She married Richard Palmer (1765-1806) in 1791.

Note

Mezzotint with stipple (mixed method), printed in black ink. 'First proof' before all letters, signed in graphite by the printmaker in the margin at lower right: 'Saml. Cousins.'. The first state after letters bears a publication date of 18th March 1875. An inscription on the verso (which has at some point been visible through a mount aperture, since lost, presumably during Charles Middleton-Wake's ownership of the print): 'selected 1st Proofs / P&D Colnaghi Co.'. An additional inscription in the same hand to the left, 'full margin' and partial letters cut off when the sheet was cut down. Inscribed in graphite on recto by a curatorial hand at lower left: 'Sir J. Reynolds pinx.'; at lower centre: 'Miss Brooks'; at lower right: 'S. Cousins sculp. / W.23 nI'. Inscribed in graphite at lower right: 'Bequeathed by C.H. Middleton-Wake, M.A. / Christ's College, December 1915'.
