After the painting by Rubens (c.1614/16; National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1965.13.1). Daniel sits in a cave at centre right, left leg crossed over right, drapery around his groin, his hands held together in an attitude of prayer, his eyes raised heavenwards through an opening in the cave roof. He is surrounded by lions, seven male and two female, a few asleep or in repose, others snarling or agitated. The bones of previous victims, including a human skull, are seen in the foreground.

Mezzotint. Trimmed to the platemark. Later published state by John P. Thompson, which is undescribed in Frankau (see curatorial annotation in Frankau). Artists' names etched in the inscription space at lower left and right: 'Painted by P.P. Rubens' and 'Engraved by W. Ward'. Title engraved and etched in closed letters: 'DANIEL in the LION'S DEN / From the original Picture by Rubens in the possession of His Grace the Duke of Hamilton'. The coat of arms of the Duke of Hamilton engraved at the centre, with motto 'THROUGH'. Publication line engraved in upright letters: 'London Published July. 1. 1794. by John. P. Thompson Gt. Newport Street'. Inscribed in graphite at lower right: 'Kerrich' and on the verso: '445'.
