Glory
Sculptor: Baratta, Giovanni (the Younger)
Carrara white marble, carved in the round; on grey veined marble pedestal, with black marble cartouche. A full length figure of a woman, representing 'Glory' supported on a high pedestal.
History note: James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos (1674-1744), Canons, Middlesex; Peter Burrell (1724-75) by whom donated to the University in 1748; transferred to the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1885

The inscription on the black marble is not the original as devised by James Brydges, first Duke of Chandos (1784-1744) which read: GLORIA, MARLBURI, LAURO TUA TEMPORA CINGIT / DIVA LUBENS QUORSUM? PAR DECUS INDE REFERT. This translates as: "Why does the goddess Glory gladly circle your brows with laurel, Marlborough? Thereby she gains equal honor."
