When acquired by Dr Glaisher the figure was described as 'Grief at an Urn' but is probably intended to represent 'Andromache mourning over the ashes of Hector'. This figure can be attribued to Leeds on the basis of examples marked LEEDS POTTERY at Temple Newsam House, Leeds (1947.0016.0197), and LEEDS in the Victoria and Albert Museum (C.29-1955). It was probably derived from a Derby porcelain model, as it is not closely related to the print of Andromache and Hecuba weeping over the Ashes of Hector by Thomas Burke (1749-1815) after Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807) published in 1771 by W. Wynne Rylands which inspired the Bristol porcelain figure of Andromache.
