Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed and painted in blue. Circular bowl with deep sloping curved sides, standing on a hollow stem with a spreading circular foot. The exterior of the bowl is painted with an arcade with clustered columns enclosing floral sprays and insects. The spandrels above are filled with foliage except one which has an oval cartouche inscribed 'Dan: Whincopp/1727'. The stem is decorated with birds, flowers and foliage. Inside there is a central group of stylized flowers and leaves, and on the sides, flying birds alternating with floral sprays.

Note

Despite the unusual arcade on the exterior it is not possible yet to give a conclusive attribution for this bowl, because the other decoration is comparable to motifs found on London and Bristol and Brislington wares
