Circular with steeply sloping rim and deep curved sides, standing on a wide, shallow footring. The inside is decorated with a man mounted on a horse cantering to the left towards a fence, with greensward in the foreground, and a blue shrub on the viewer's right. The cavalier wears a plumed hat, a sash which streams out behind him, and top boots with spurs. He holds the reigns in his right hand and a baton in his left. This dish was catalogued by Rackham (1935), as English, but late 20th century opinion veered towards a Friesan attribution. The image appears to be based on a print of an equestrian portrait of William III by T. van Merlen of which there is an example in the British Museum, Department of Prints and Drawings (1848.9.11.353)
