Description

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in polychrome with fantastic Chinese buildings and trees, and with a bird and butterfly overhead, surrounded by a border of alternating panels of stylized flowers and Chinese trellis pattern.

Tin-glazed earthenware painted in blue, olive-green, yellow, and dull red. Circular with a gently sloping rim and shallow well. In the middle are Chinese pagodas, bridges, and trees with a bird and a butterfly overhead. The rim is decorated with sprays of formal flowers in four panels separated by panels of Chinese trellis pattern. The base is painted in blue with the initials 'GL' . There are three spur or peg marks on the reverse. A small hole has been pierced in the side of the well above the bird and butterfly.

History note: Jules Taurin, 4 Place Barthélemy and 3 rue Damiette, Rouen; purchased for 450 francs (about £4 5s.0d) on 21 October 1925 by Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge
