Apollo
Production: Unidentified Delft factory
Tin-glazed earthenware figure of Apollo painted in blue, green, yellow, and red
Pale buff earthenware, moulded, tin-glazed bluish-white, and painted in blue, green, yellow, and red. The figure is supported on a circular straight-sided green mound base with a blue and yellow tree stump at the back. Apollo stands in front of it with his right leg slightly advanced. He holds a green wreath in his left hand and has his right bent at the elbow. He has yellow hair and is nude except for a strategically-placed red scarf. The contours of his body are shaded in blue.

Although this figure and its three companions bear the mark of Pieter Kocs who directed the Greek A Factory between 1701-22, they were probably made in the 19th century. Rackham (1935) however, considered that they were Dutch and early 18th century, but mentioned that their authenticity had been questioned.
