Description

Fritware painted in polychrome under a colourless glaze

Fritware, probably mould made, painted in red slip, black, blue, green and black under a colourless glaze
Shape: segmental bowl with a flange rim, sits on a low, wide foot ring
Interior: on the rim a rock wave pattern is painted in blue, black and green and is divided by black ‘S’ shapes framed by red dots. On the cavetto, stylised palmette leaves outlined thickly in blue and with a central red dot are painted on a background of black wave scrolls. In the roundel, two floral sprays of saz leaves and flowers are painted in blue and red, all outlined in black and reserved on a green background.
Exterior: below the rim a black bracketed line, while on the body a frieze of green rosette and blue fleur de lys are outlined in black. The blue pigment has run slightly into the surrounding glaze. The glaze covers the surface except for the rim of the foot ring.
