Toby Jug of Sailor Type
Production: Unidentified Staffordshire factory
Lead-glazed earthenware jug in the form of a seated man holding a cup, a screw of tobacco, and a jug
Off-white earthenware, press-moulded, and decorated with dark brown slip, underglaze colours, greyish-blue and green glazes. The underside of base slightly concave and unglazed. The man is seated on a chest resting on a D-shaped low mound base with a rock at the front on which he rests his right foot. He faces towards the front with his head turned slightly to his right. He holds a brown drinking cup in his right hand and in his left holds a screw of tobacco, and supports a large brown jug on the top of the chest beside him. He wears a dark brown tricorne hat, a greyish-blue neck tie and waistcoat, a yellowish-brown and yellow coat, greyish-blue trousers, and dark brown shoes with greyish-blue buckles. The strap handle is attached to a panel rising from the top of the chest against which the man rests his back. It curves outwards and downwards and has an inward curl at the bottom.

Toby jugs of this design are described as 'Sailor' type Tobys because the drinker is seated on a sea chest, and on some examples has striped trousers. The point at the front of the tricorn hat allows the vessel to pour when it is held by the handle and tipped forward. When new it may have had a cover in the shape of the crown of the hat.
