White earthenware, moulded, and painted in blue under very slightly blue lead-glaze. Circular with scalloped shell-moulded edge, gently sloping rim and deep well. Note

Plates moulded with shell edging were among the most common plate forms made in creamware and pearlware in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. 'Pagoda and fence' patterns also known as 'Chinese house' patterns, were produced by several Staffordshire and Yorkshire potters. The plate belongs to an as yet unattributed group of underglaze blue designs, which have clusters of three dots in the background, possibly indicating birds. See Documentation, Roberts, 2006.
