Description

Fritware painted in black under a turquoise glaze

Fritware painted in black under a transparent turquoise glaze
Shape: shallow bowl with curvaceous sides and a plain rim, a slight dimple on the interior base; sits on a low, wide foot ring
Interior: inverted ‘V’ shapes and groups of dashes hang from the rim. On the body a fish-headed monster with a tail wears spotted clothes and holds a standard. The figure is flanked by plants with fern like leaves. The composition is painted in a sketchy style. Glaze is cracked and has pooled at one point in the cavetto.
Exterior: undecorated except for pitted glaze which runs unevenly over the lower body. Splashes of glaze are present on the underside of the foot ring. A scar mark on the upper body indicates contact with another vessel in the kiln.
