Description

White earthenware, moulded in the form of a seated man holding a jug, painted and sponged in blue, yellow, orange and grey and black under blue-tinted glaze

White earthenware, press-moulded, with applied handle, painted and sponged in blue, yellow, orange, and grey under clear, blue-tinted lead-glaze. The man is seated facing the front with his feet apart, and holds the handle of a foaming jug of ale in his left hand and supports it with his right. He has shoulder-length grey hair, and his eyes and eyebrows are also grey. He wears a grey tricorne hat, with a removable crown, a bluish-white waistcoat under a long blue coat with pockets, and orange cuffs with three black buttons on each; orange breeches with three black buttons at the knees, stockings with patterned with brown wavy stripes and orange zig-zags, and grey shoes with bows on top. His yellow jug is decorated with brown spots and V-shapes. The base, the sides and back of the stool and the handle are sponged in orange and blue.

Note

The underglaze colouring of this Toby Jug is in the typical grey, brown, yellow, orange, and blue palette of Pratt Ware. The jug is unusual in having retained its original crown to the hat which forms a removable cover.
