Dutch Girl with a Basket of Fruit

Cream earthenware figure of a girl holding a basket of fruit and a bunch of grapes decorated with coloured glazes
Cream earthenware, press-moulded in parts, assembled, and decorated with clear and coloured lead-glazes: green, pale yellow, pale brown, very dark brown, greyish-purple, and a little blue. The figure is supported on a low square base with straight sides covered with clear, faintly yellowish glaze. It is hollow underneath and has a circular ventilation hole in the centre under the figure. The girl stands beside a brown tree trunk on a low mound with roughly fluted sides coloured brown, and decorated on top with two green applied flowers and leaves. She faces towards the viewer, and stands with her right foot turned out. Over her bent right arm she holds a pale yellow basket of fruit which rests on top of the tree trunk, and in her left hand holds a bunch of grapes dangling down beside her. She wears a close fitting yellowish-white cap, a green laced up bodice over a white chemise, a greyish-purple skirt, and a mostly white sash with blue spots. Her shoes are very dark brown with touches of yellow.
History note: An unknown owner in King's Lynn; sold for 15s. to Mr Jennings, Newmarket, who sold it for £1.5s.0d. on 11 February 1911 to Dr J.W.L. Glaisher, FRS, Trinity College, Cambridge

This figure was certainly in production by 1787 when John Wood's sales ledger of 8 February 1787 included a list of figures 'Bought of Ralph Wood' including 1 Pr Dutch Boy & Girl with Basket of Fruit 1 8 (1s 8d). The record also confirms the titles given to the figures .An example of the Dutch Boy is known marked 'Ra. Wood Burslem' and of the girl marked 'R. WOOD'.
